tooth extraction may sound intimidating, but it is sometimes the best dental care option for a tooth that is severely damaged or impacting your oral health. Because this is a major dental procedure, your dentist will take every possible step to keep you comfortable throughout your visit and make healing as easy as possible. Here’s what to expect during the treatment.

Your Guide to a Tooth Extraction

Anesthetic

Whenever you’re having a tooth removed, your dentist will administer an anesthetic to keep the area comfortably numb. For a single tooth extraction, you’ll likely receive a local anesthetic, but if you’re having multiple teeth removed or there are other complicating factors, your provider may opt for general anesthetic.

Gaining Access

Tooth ExtractionIn some cases, the tooth to be removed is impacted, meaning it has not emerged from the bone or gum tissue. If this is the case, your dentist will expose the tooth to make an extraction possible.

Removing the Tooth

Tooth extraction is sometimes called “pulling” a tooth, but rest assured the actual process is much more gentle. Your dentist will work the tooth back and forth to loosen it from the bone and ligaments keeping it in place, then draw it out. If the tooth is particularly stubborn, it may be cut into pieces to make extraction easier.

Recovery

After your tooth is removed, your dentist will likely recommend a period of rest to allow the extraction site to heal. You may be prescribed pain medication. It is important to keep the area clean and not to disturb the blood clot that forms in your socket. Eventually, the site will heal and close.

A tooth extraction might sound scary, but your dentist will do everything possible to make it easy. If you’re concerned about your upcoming procedure, bring any questions to your dental care provider.
