Millions of homes across the country rely on septic services to keep their plumbing running. Septic systems provide a drainage and wastewater collection method that is a practical and efficient choice for homes that don’t use sewer lines to dispose of their waste. While common, many owners of septic systems may not know exactly how they work. To give you a better understanding, here’s a brief overview of septic systems.

Septic tanks are large concrete or steel structures typically buried in the front or side yard of a home. These units use drainage pipes on either side to keep water moving through the tank, which usually has around a 1,000-gallon capacity. Wastewater flows out of a home, through regular plumbing and into the septic tank, where the material separates.

septic systemA septic tank works in layers. As wastewater enters the tank, it mixes and settles naturally to form distinct layers. The top level is referred to as the scum layer, which is where anything that floats to the top of the tank sits. Anything heavier sinks to the bottom to form what is called the sludge layer. Between the two sits a layer of water. You may have seen movies where a septic tank backup causes a lawn to fill with sewage. This is because if tanks are not cleaned by a septic service, the sludge layer can grow too large and overflow to the drain field.

Septic systems can last for many decades with regular service and maintenance. Not every home has the ideal conditions for a septic system based on the type of soil and drainage possibilities. Consult a septic installation service if you’re considering a contained plumbing system for your home.
