Getting locked out of a car can happen to even the most responsible and organized people. Fortunately, if you find yourself in a car lockout situation without a spare key, there are a few options that don’t involve shoving a coat hanger through your window. If you experience a lockout, here are a few tips to get you back on the road safely.

What to Do During a Car Lockout

1. Call for Assistance

If you have a roadside assistance service, such as AAA®, lockouts are a perfect time to contact them. They may open the car for you or tow you home so you can retrieve a spare. Additionally, consider calling a friend to either drive you home or deliver a spare key.

2. Get a Temporary Key

As long as you provide the vehicle identification number (VIN) to the dealer, they will make a key that opens the doors. However, keep in mind it will not start the car. While this is less expensive than having a full set of keys made or calling a locksmith, the availability of this option varies from car to car.

3. Call a Locksmith

If you have exhausted all other options, a locksmith will get you back in your car quickly. Many locksmiths will also make you new keys, but it doesn’t come cheap. Expect a newly cut key to run about $200 if you want to include a fob for keyless entry. Higher end cars may cost more.
