If you plan to move from Hawaii to the mainland or another country, you may have concerns about shipping your personal belongings—let alone your 3,000-pound vehicle. Fortunately, whether you’re moving to the mainland or across the world, you don’t have to leave your car or motorcycle behind. By following a few key steps, your car will be there to greet you when you arrive at your destination.

3 Steps for Moving Vehicles Overseas

1. Choose an Auto-equipped Shipping Company

First, you need to find a moving company based in Hawaii that can ship your car overseas. Once you’ve chosen a company, an employee should be able to give you a rough price estimate.

2. Provide Vital Documents

Your moving company will ask you to fill out some paperwork as well as provide a few key documents. Prepare to present your driver’s license, your car’s license and registration, and your proof of insurance. You will also need to provide the car’s original title. If you don’t have one, you will need to provide a letter from the lien holder that explicitly authorizes you to ship it.

3. Drop off

movingNext, your shipping company will coordinate a time for you to drop off your car at a Hawaii port. Before you drop it off, make sure you clear the car of your possessions. It cannot have any leaks, and should not have more than a quarter tank of gas. Ultimately, it should be in safe driving condition.

All car or motorcycle shipments will depart from either Hilo, Honolulu, Kahului, Kawaihae, or Nawiliwili. Your car will be loaded into an ocean freighter before sailing safely overseas to your chosen port of destination. The shipping company will maintain your vehicle in custody until you can pick it up. On average, it takes about three to four weeks for vehicles to arrive at the mainland. International travel times will vary.
