Engagement Ring Trends Over Time, Newport-Fort Thomas, Kentucky

Engagement rings date as far back as the Ancient Egyptians, many of whom have been discovered with metal wires around their fingers. From Egypt to Ancient Rome, through the first diamond ring of the Middle Ages, the popular designs of these rings have changed drastically over time. And, over the last two centuries, engagement ring designs have taken on a whole new look. Check out a few of these popular trends below.

Engagement Ring Trends Through History

Many engagement rings during this century were decorated with romantic features, like hearts and flowers. In fact, diamonds were only used after a vast quantity of them was discovered in South Africa. This was also the time during which the “Tiffany setting” was created--the style we know and love today, with the diamond raised above the band to show it off.

Early 1900s

engagement ringsIn the early 1900s, the styles tended to be very simple. People loved the look of a small diamond set in a yellow gold band. It was in the 1920s when that trend changed to a more striking approach, as rings often featured a lace motif and geometric shapes. Then, the 1930s’ rings began to show off the Art Deco themes characteristic of that time.

Mid 1900s

The 1940s took a bit of a turn, as these rings feature curved, bold patterns. Additionally, those dealing with financial difficulties from the war often turned to rubies or sapphires. In the ‘50s, stackable rings of different metals and colors took over. During the next decade, platinum became increasingly popular thanks to the postwar boom in financial stability.

Late 1900s

In the 1970s, the princess cut diamonds were invented to create a new shape for the generation. Then, the trends changed once again in the 1980s, as brides began showing off sapphire rings instead of diamonds. Finally, in the 1990s, radiant-cut diamonds with a chic look took over to fit the style of the time.
