After you’ve installed a new roof or had a routine visit from your roofing contractor, it’s a good time to revisit your gutters. Gutters play an important role in keeping water away from the roof and the rest of the home to avoid damage during the stormy winter months, so it’s best to service them before the winter. Here are three more helpful tips to ensure your gutters continue working as they should all season long.

3 Important Tips to Help Keep Your Gutters Clear

1. Unclog Blockages

As beautiful as falling leaves can be, they are dangerous to the health of your gutter system. Leaves, twigs and other debris that are dislodged during the stormy fall weather can clog up your gutters and stop water from flowing through easily. Take the time to carefully remove the material that has collected before the first big storm of the season to avoid water damage.

2. Ensure Flow Distance

guttersThe point of installing gutters and drain pipes is to carry water a safe distance away from your home. Before winter begins, make sure your downspouts travel at least 10 feet away from the home itself to ensure you don’t have pooling water around the base of the structure. This is especially important if you live in an area where standing water is prone to freezing, as this can cause even more severe damage to the home and gutter system.

3. Inspect for Damage

A damaged gutter system is essentially useless, so it pays to check it for cracks and leaks before the rain begins. Rotting and stains around the siding as well as leaking and separation from the fascia are all indications there is a major problem with the gutters that needs to be fixed as soon as possible. If you do suspect an issue, call your roofing contractor right away to get a second, professional opinion.
