Take a moment to think about everything your eyes do. They are more than your source of vision, as they express so much and are one of the features people notice first. Give back to these windows to your soul via proper eye care; there is plenty you can do to maintain your vision and the overall health of these essential features.

5 Eye Care Tips

1. Wear Sunglasses Year-Round

Protect your eyes with UVA and UVB-blocking sunglasses year-round. Sunglasses are not for sunny, warm weather only, as the sun can still damage your eyes and skin in the dead of winter when it is hiding behind a cloud. Sunglasses protect you against retinal damage and slow the development of cataracts while also shielding the delicate skin around your eyes.

2. Enjoy A Healthy, Balanced Diet

Maintain a healthy diet that includes plenty of eye-healthy foods, such as kale, spinach, carrots, oranges, nuts, beans, and oily fish. These foods contain eye-boosting vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids, including vitamin C and E, omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA, zinc, and lutein. All help protect you against age-related vision issues such as cataracts and macular degeneration.

3. Use Safety Eyewear

Protect your eyes whenever you are engaging in a hazardous project or contact sport, such as home repairs or ice hockey. Use standard ANSI-approved protective eyewear for home repairs and similar projects, and sports goggles with polycarbonate lenses during sporting events to protect from injury.

4. Look Away From Computer Screens

Periodically look away from your computer and phone screens to avoid eye strain, blurry vision, and headaches. Staring at these screens too long can cause these issues as well as neck and shoulder pain, dry eyes, and problems focusing on distant objects.

Visit your eye doctor as often as necessary depending on factors such as your age, current eye health, and family history. Eye conditions and diseases such as macular degeneration and glaucoma are much easier to treat when they are detected early. Schedule dilated eye exams that include glaucoma tests to keep your eyes healthy.
