When you arrive at a print shop with an important project, you’ll most likely be asked whether you prefer offset or digital printing. Each process has its own advantages and disadvantages, and the best one for you depends on the run size you need, as well as your desired colors and budget. While offset printing used to be the norm, innovations in digital printing technology have brought exciting new capabilities to commercial printing. To help you understand the difference between the two processes, each one has been broken down below.

Offset vs. Digital Printing

Offset Printing

Also known as offset lithography, this process is the most commonly used in high-volume commercial printing. The image is first burned onto a plate (often made from aluminum), which is then transferred (offset) onto a rubber blanket. From here, the image is rolled onto the printing surface (such as paper).

Offset is often considered to be higher quality than digital printing and offers a wide variety of custom papers and specialty inks. Due to the involvement of creating plates, many shops prefer to use this process for larger runs. While this option is pricier than digital, you receive better cost efficacy when printing more pieces.

Digital Printing

While offset printing requires a new plate for each design, digital printing is ideal for projects that require a great deal of customization. For example, if you need to print custom envelopes with different names and addresses, this process would be the most convenient.

A plus of digital printing is it’s an affordable option for projects with short runs, allowing you to print only the number of items that you need. As a result, shops often require lower minimum quantities.
