The loss of a loved one can leave surviving family members bereft, exhausted and confused. A reputable funeral home can make the planning process easier, but like in any industry, not all businesses are equally reputable. You can avoid being taken in by a scam or unethical business practices by enlisting the help of a friend or family member in the planning process and by educating yourself on common scams you might see.

3 Common Funeral Home Scams

Mandatory Embalming

Many states, including Connecticut, do not require embalming, but some funeral home directors will say otherwise. Embalming adds to funeral costs, and may not be necessary. Some funeral homes have an embalming policy: if you are transporting the deceased by air, having an open casket service or waiting more than 48 hours to have the funeral service, the funeral home may enact their policy. If your funeral director insists on embalming, ask if it is the funeral home’s policy or if the state requires it.

High-Pressure Selling

You could run into high-pressure sales tactics whether you’re planning a service for a loved one or pre-planning for yourself. Be wary of funeral homes that pressure you into signing a contract before you’ve had the opportunity to think it over, especially when pre-planning. A good funeral director will respect your wishes, answer all your questions and let you take your time making a decision.

Casket Hidingfuneral home

Funeral homes are required by the Federal Trade Commission to provide consumers with a list of all available caskets with pricing and descriptions. Don’t be swayed or intimidated by the expensive, fancy caskets on display in the showroom. Much like a car dealership, the best (and priciest) models take center stage, but you should insist on seeing your options.

Planning a funeral can be stressful, but working with a funeral home you trust will make the process smoother. Don’t be afraid to ask a lot of questions, and insist on getting all the information you need in writing before you make any decisions.
