Before you received dentures, you may have made several changes to your eating habits due to missing teeth or gum pain. However, you might not expect that how and what you eat will change after you get your dentures, as well. Dental Clinic of Stuttgart of Arkansas County, AR, explains the steps you should take to adjust to your new dental appliance.

How to Adjust Eating Habits With Dentures

1. Let Go of Expectations

denturesMany patients think they will be able to chew the same way they did with their natural teeth. However, this isn’t necessarily the case. While you can eat foods you enjoyed before your dentures, there are some limitations. After any cosmetic dentistry procedure, your dentist will caution you against eating anything too hard or sticky that can damage your dental work — the same is true for dentures.

2. Opt for Smaller or Softer Foods

You can indulge in apples, carrots, and even steak with caution. But instead of big bites, cut tough-to-chew or crunchy food into smaller pieces. This will make it easier to eat, and you’ll have less discomfort with your dentures afterward. In most cases, though, stick with softer options such as cooked vegetables, shredded chicken, and puréed foods.

3. Avoid Biting Hard

If you have to bite into food, resist the natural urge to use your incisors; applying too much pressure on the front part of the dentures can dislodge them. Instead, use your canines to help displace some of the bite force. An even better option is to simply cut the food up.

4. Know Which Foods to Skip

Small pieces of food can get lodged between your dentures and your gums, causing an uncomfortable, and sometimes painful, problem. Nut butter, corn on the cob, seeds, and popcorn are big offenders when it comes to irritation. However, after you’re used to your dentures, you’ll be back to eating a relatively normal diet.
