Good dental care is an important part of your child's overall health. By teaching them to brush and taking them to the dentist, you're instilling smart habits early. However, a first dental visit can sometimes be hard for kids and parents. Knowing what to expect makes the process easier and less intimidating for your young one.

A Guide to Your Child’s First Dental Visit

X-Rays

DentistUsually, your kids' dentist will try to examine your children's teeth visually. But in many cases, x-rays are necessary to get a full picture of what's going on in their mouth. Your hygienist will try to make this process as easy and fun as possible.

Exam

The doctor will examine your child's mouth to check for problems and assess their oral health. If your kid is very young, you may need to hold them during the exam; otherwise, they can simply sit in the dental chair and follow along as your dentist explains the instruments used to get a better look.

Cleaning

An important part of any dental visit is the cleaning. The dentist will thoroughly floss and polish the child’s teeth, then apply fluoride. This helps strengthen the enamel, increasing their cavity resistance until your next visit.

Findings

Before you leave, the dentist will discuss the results of your child's exam with you, highlighting any problem areas and recommending any necessary treatment. You may need to make another appointment, or, if your child has a clean bill of health, the doctor will simply let you know when to come for the next routine visit.
