Since 1915, Hawaii has required employers to provide workers' compensation insurance for their employees. The insurance protects workers from suffering a total loss of income, and ensures they get the care they need to recover from work-related accidents and illnesses. Here are the benefits injured employees can receive through workers’ compensation insurance.

What Workers’ Compensation Insurance Covers

Medical Costs for Injury Treatment & Care

Workers’ compensation insurance covers medical expenses necessary to treat and care for injured employees, regardless of fault. Similar to health insurance, coverage includes doctor visits, medications, surgeries, therapy, and reasonable related transportation costs. In Hawaii, employees can choose their physicians.

Lost Wages & Disability Benefits

Workers’ compensation insurance coverage pays employees a percentage of their income while on-the-job injuries prevent them from working. They may receive temporary partial or total disability benefits, as long as physicians certify them as disabled.

Permanent total disability benefits are awarded to workers when their injury prevents them from ever returning to work. Workers who lose the use of a percentage of their bodies but return to work receive payments for permanent partial disability.

Vocational Rehabilitation

Disfigurement Benefits

Employees who suffer scars after surgery or laceration, including discoloration or deformity, can receive disfigurement benefits under workers’ compensation insurance coverage.

Death Benefits

The surviving spouse and children of workers who pass away because of work-related illnesses or injuries receive insurance benefits payments, including for funeral expenses.
