One of the most influential specialties in the health care industry is that of the OB-GYN. With nearly 4 million births in the United States each year as well as a range of service areas, these medical professionals touch the lives of many people. The abbreviated name is actually a combination of two medical specialties, obstetrics and gynecology. Though the two are closely related, they have unique functions.

What Does an OB-GYN Do?

Obstetrics

An obstetrician (or OB) is a physician with expertise in pregnancy and childbirth. Though all medical doctors know how to deliver a baby, obstetricians are required to complete a rigorous four-year residency program that specializes in the delivery process.

These highly skilled professionals are responsible for caring for mothers-to-be, from conception to delivery Your OB will perform ultrasounds, blood work, and other routine tests throughout your pregnancy. They will also assist you throughout labor and have the surgical experience for Caesarian sections and emergencies.

Immediately following birth, they’ll check on your newborn; however, you should find a primary pediatrician before your child is born. Though many women choose to see an obstetrician, it’s incredibly important to do so if your pregnancy is deemed high-risk.

Gynecology

The purpose of a gynecologist (GYN) is to provide for women’s health care. These individuals have expert knowledge of diseases and conditions that affect women’s reproductive health.

OB-GYNEach time you schedule a checkup with your gynecologist, he or she will conduct a breast examination and Pap smear to check for cancer and other illnesses. Depending on your situation, they might also recommend tests for sexually transmitted infections.

Additionally, you can discuss family planning and birth control methods with them, or other health concerns. They’re experienced in diagnosing and treating women’s conditions such as cervical cancer and endometriosis. Hormone deficiencies and osteoporosis, which can occur around menopause, are also part of their expertise.
