Your dentist might recommend a dental crown for cosmetic reasons or for extra protection and strength due to decay. Regardless of the reason, it's important to know what to expect during the dental procedure. Elizabeth A Loseke DDS PC has been providing family dental care and cosmetic procedures to the Kearney, NE, community since 1993. Below, she explains the step-by-step process of crowns.

Dentist Explains What to Expect When Getting a Dental Crown

First Visit: Examinationdentist

The initial visit for a dental crown involves examining your mouth and prepping the tooth for the procedure. You can expect x-rays to check that you don't need a root canal before placing the crown -- if you do need a root canal, the procedure can happen in their office. Additionally, this is when you will decide alongside your dentist what type of material works best for your mouth and needs, whether that be porcelain or metal. If you choose porcelain, which is common for cosmetic reasons, you'll pick a shade that closely matches your natural teeth's color.

First Visit: Preparation

Local anesthesia will be placed around the tooth, so you don't have to worry about feeling any discomfort. Your dentist will then file the entire tooth to make sure the crown has enough space for a proper fit. Afterwards, an impression will be made of the tooth, which might involve a digital scan or an impression molding—this will be sent out to a manufacturer to make the crown. While you wait for that to be made, a temporary crown will be glued to the tooth.

Second Visit: Placement

After a few weeks, your dentist will have the permanent crown ready to go. Just like before, the tooth and surrounding gum will be numbed. Once everything is numb, the dentist will use a cement solution to adhere the crown to the tooth permanently. It typically takes less than 30 minutes total for the placement. Afterwards, your dentist will provide guidance on caring for the crown.. Fortunately, you can go about your oral hygiene like normal.
