Being nervous is a natural part of taking your first road test, but knowing what to expect will help calm these jitters. The Morgan School of Driving is where Monroe County NY residents go to learn the rules of the road, and their friendly instructors offer lessons throughout the county to prepare students to drive safely and earn their driver’s license.

Here are a few steps to expect the first time you take on the challenge of a road test:

  • Be Prepared: Make sure you have all the paperwork required for the test. You will need your picture learner’s permit, your proof of classroom completion (either the Driver’s Education completion certificate (MV-285) or the 5-Hour Pre-Licensing Course certificate (MV-278). If you are under the age of 18, you must have the Certificate of Supervised Driving (MV-262). Be on time.

  • Driving Maneuvers:  It’s time to hit the road. The exam administrator will give directions, and it’s your job to do what they say while carefully following all traffic laws. To assess your abilities accurately, the proctor will guide you through a route that requires several specific maneuvers, including left and right turns, 2-way and all-way stops, traffic lights, and a K-turn and a parallel park.
  • Parallel Parking: Parallel parking is a small part of the road test. Intersections and turns are more important. By parallel parking, you demonstrate your understanding of observation while backing, vehicle control in a tight spot, judgment to other vehicles and to the curb.

If all goes well, you will receive a temporary license immediately after the test. You will receive your picture license in the mail in a few weeks. If you’re ready to schedule a road test, then contact the Morgan School of Driving to sign up for driving lessons.
