For optimal comfort, a fitted sheet is necessary for every bed. But taking one off and folding it is a lot harder than it looks. You may fight with the fabric and elastic band only for the final product to look like a jumbled mess. Thankfully, there are a few tips and tricks you can use to avoid the frustration and save time.

Your Guide to Folding a Fitted Sheet

1. Turn It Inside Out

Start by turning your fitted sheet inside out. This switch forces the elastic band closer to the interior of the sheet so your fold can be flatter. Once inside out, take the fitted corners and fold them inward to create squared edges with your sheet.

sheets2. Fold Vertically

Once your corners are tucked in, fold the sheet vertically so that the top two corners line up with the bottom two corners. Place the bedding on a hard surface, and smooth out any wrinkles.

3. Fold in Half Again

Next, fold the sheet in half the opposite direction to create a long, narrow rectangle. Keep the fitted corners tucked so the weight of the remaining fabric will maintain a smooth fold and prevent the sheet from “ballooning up” in storage.

4. Compact as Needed

Depending on where you store the fitted sheet, you can fold it into smaller and smaller squares. Consider storing the folded sheet inside of pillowcases to ensure all bedroom sets stay together for easy locating later. Finally, you should refold the fitted sheets periodically to ensure no fabric or elastic damage in the creases.

Use these directions to pack away your summer and fall bedding to make room for winter blankets and sheets. If you have a variety of sheets, down comforters, and pillowcases to put away for the season, consider using space-saver bags to protect them until they find their way to the mattress again.
