Students in the United States are falling behind when it comes to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education (STEM). Elementary school test scores are not as behind as those of high schoolers, but the United States needs to do better in all grades when it comes to STEM education to produce top talent in these areas.

A STEM-focused education that begins in early childhood lays the foundation for a lifetime of math and science competence, which is great preparation for college and career. The need for STEM-educated workers is growing. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that STEM jobs will grow by about nine million between 2012 and 2022.

Problem-solving and innovative thinking are major components of STEM education, as teachers give students the freedom to experiment and explore in the classroom through different learning activities.

Teachers who are well versed in STEM teaching approaches know how to weave science, technology, engineering, and math throughout the curriculum; as a result, these subjects become a part of daily life. STEM in elementary school does not necessarily mean introducing advanced physics to students who aren’t ready for it. It simply means choosing age-appropriate concepts and encouraging students to ask questions and honor their curiosity. Examining how objects work and nature walks are examples of what STEM education in elementary school can look like.

If students in the United States are going to catch up to their European and Asian peers and compete for the millions of tech jobs emerging over the next decade, STEM must be a priority in early childhood. Don’t wait another day before encouraging a love of math or science in your child, as well as talking to your child’s teacher about how they incorporate STEM in the classroom.
