Roof leaks are one of the most common and frustrating problems Hawaii homeowners face in the winter. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to prevent leaks before they emerge. My Roofing Co. in Kaneohe has over 35 years of experience in roof repair and replacement. Here, their team offers five tips for winter roof leak prevention.

5 Roof Repair Tips to Prevent Winter Leaks

1. Replace or Repair Shingles

If you have a shingled roof, check for damaged, curled, or missing shingles. Also, look for pools of granules in the gutters and near the foundation. When shingles are damaged or lose their protective granules, they become ineffective and susceptible to leaks. Bare spots with missing shingles are also likely to result in leakage. If just a few shingles need to be replaced, you may be able to do it yourself. However, if a significant portion is damaged or there are several bare spots, it’s best to call a professional.

2. Check the Gutters

roof repairGutters should be inspected and cleaned at least twice a year, preferably in the fall and spring. In fall, leaves and debris can accumulate and clog the drains, causing water to build up. When that happens, the gutters cannot direct water away from the house. Instead, water can accumulate and seep into the roof, resulting in leaks and damage. This is particularly problematic in wet areas like Hawaii, where heavy coastal storms are likely to result in excessive water buildup.

3. Upgrade Insulation

Roof leaks can also occur as a result of poor attic insulation. Upgrading insulation has twofold benefits; you’ll prevent leaks and heat loss, and you’ll reduce your monthly energy costs.

4. Inspect Abutments

Abutments, such as chimneys and skylights, are some of the most common spots where leaks occur. That’s because water and debris often accumulate in these areas. Abutments must be properly installed and sealed to prevent the moisture from leaking into the house. Make sure the chimney is flashed and sealed. Residential skylights must also be sealed.

5. Get a Roof Inspection

Not all damage is visible from the ground and, particularly if you have a steep roof, it may not be safe to climb up for a closer look. In order to be certain your roof is ready for winter, it’s a good idea to have a roof inspection. During the inspection, the professional roofer will check for damage and vulnerabilities where leaks may occur. If repairs are needed, it’s best to have them done before the first snowfall.
