Real firewood not only provides warmth for your home throughout the cold months, but it also gives an inviting feel to your home or outdoor living space that a gas fire just can’t match. However, storing enough wood throughout the winter comes with its challenges, and proper storage is essential. To help you keep warm through the cold, the team from H&H Tree Service has shared three tips for storing your firewood.

3 Tips for Storing Your Firewood

1. Cover It

Good firewood can be ruined by rain or snow introducing moisture into the wood. Not only is wood nearly unusable with excessive moisture, but moisture can also cause potentially dangerous popping embers. At a minimum, wood should be protected with a tarp or plastic covering. You can even add a beautiful feature to your yard with a roof and design to match your home that will keep your firewood dry.

2. Lift It Up

firewoodLetting your firewood rest on the ground can also lead to it absorbing excessive moisture and rotting. The dirt holds excess moisture well and is not an ideal surface for your wood. Lift your firewood off the ground even just a few inches, and you will appreciate the dry and ready-to-use kindling for your fireplace when the cold sets in.

3. Give It Room

For even burning and best results in the fireplace or pit, give the wood some room to breathe. Store it in an area with ample sunlight to help the drying process and ideally somewhere that a natural breeze flows through. If you are storing multiple rows of wood, leave about one foot between each row to facilitate ideal moisture levels and reduced potential for mildew or rot.
