Mood, over time, has proven to have an immense influence on physical health. It can improve or decrease bodily function, increase or decrease the risk of developing harmful conditions, and affect the choices people make. Positive thinking has been considered a key to long life for thousands of years in cultures around the world, and a recent study shows an interesting correlation with women’s health.

A study conducted at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health surveyed over 70,000 female registered nurses about optimism. Based on the data—gathered over an 8-year period—the study showed that those with a positive outlook on life had a 31% decrease in early mortality. Likewise, women with a negative outlook had only a 25% reduced risk.

womens health The study, which appeared in the American Journal of Epidemiology, specifically addressed cancer, heart disease, stroke, respiratory disease, and infection as the primary women’s health issues that could affect lifespan. These findings suggest that while it’s important to take steps to live a healthy life physically to prevent disease, it’s also important to put an emphasis on your mental health, as a negative outlook on life can inherently affect its longevity.

Optimism also affects a person’s willingness to seek help. A person who is dedicated to their well-being won’t hesitate to seek medical treatment regularly and will also be conscious of their diet and exercise. They’ll also be more willing to share their feelings, which is important for relieving stress. Collectively, this lifestyle sets the foundation for a much healthier life that, in turn, can lead to a longer and happier life.
