If your yard is looking bare and you're interested in doing some landscaping, you may be wondering when you should plant trees. Fortunately, this question has several answers. To clear the confusion, Midwest Walls & Landscape of Lincoln, NE, offers the following information about tree planting time frames.

When to Plant Your Trees & Why

General Guidance

For most of the continental United States, the best planting time for trees is in late summer or early autumn. This gives trees the chance to acclimate to the soil and weather before being exposed to extreme temperatures. Your best bet is to plant between August and September.

For Deciduous Trees

Trees or shrubs are deciduous if they lose their leaves at the end of their growing season. This indicates they are becoming dormant, which is the best time to move them. Dormant trees are less susceptible to shock, so moving them won't cause lasting damage. Over the winter, they will have a chance to adapt to their new environment. Be careful to water them thoroughly after planting.

For Coniferous Trees

Deciduous trees reveal when they're entering dormancy, but coniferous trees are not so telling. Because they are evergreen, their dormancy is less predictable. These trees are also fairly hardy, so even if they’re not dormant, they will probably survive the trauma. They do best when planted a little earlier in the autumn, but you can also transplant them later in the spring.

LandscapingWhatever trees you want to incorporate into your landscape, and no matter the time of year, moisture is a major concern. In particular, newly planted trees need plenty of water. If they are buried under a blanket of snow, they might not be getting the moisture they require until the snow melts in the spring. With this in mind, make an effort to water your trees regularly, and consider mulching them, too. This will lock moisture into the soil and prevent weeds from growing.
