If you’re just dipping your toe into the world of fish ownership for the first time, it’s important to know some basics about the tanks used to house the beautiful creatures. Understanding the differences between a saltwater and freshwater fish tank will not only keep your fish in a healthy habitat, but it will also assist in making important financial and aesthetic choices.

3 Elements to Consider When Choosing Your Fish Tank

Cost

In general, the cost of purchasing and stocking a saltwater fish tank is significantly higher than a freshwater tank. Freshwater plants typically cost between $2 and $25 while their saltwater counterparts run between $50 and $250.  If you outfit your freshwater tank with several types of plants, however, the cost can quickly skyrocket because of the associated items, such as fertilizer and carbon dioxide.

Maintenance

fish tankIn general, maintaining a saltwater tank is more intensive (and expensive) than a freshwater tank. A tank of at least 50 gallons is needed to create a healthy habitat for the fish, and the equipment to keep the environment clean, such as pumps, salt mixes, and salinity test kits, can quickly make the price go up. On the other hand, freshwater tanks don’t require a minimum size, making them easier starting places for beginners.

Environment & Fish

The environment and type of fish commonly associated with a freshwater fish tank aren’t always the most visually stunning. Freshwater tanks tend to blend many Earth tones together, creating a natural look. Saltwater tanks, however, can achieve an almost otherworldly aesthetic. The fish are brightly colored and can bring gorgeous splashes of color to any home environment.

Along with that color, however, comes a much more fragile ecosystem. Saltwater tanks require diligence and know-how to maintain while freshwater tanks and their denizens are much hardier and can withstand changes in the tank.

Both types of fish tank are a highly enjoyable starting place for sea life enthusiasts. Saltwater tanks, however, do typically require more attention and funds to maintain. But, with the proper equipment and advice, you can have a thriving underwater ecosystem in your home in no time.
