While having individual locks can provide a complex level of security, it’s rather inconvenient for property owners to carry and mark every key to open them. Fortunately, master key systems eliminate these problems without compromising security. Providing solutions to the Piedmont-Triad area in North Carolina since 1999, Ability Lock & Key explains how these ingenious systems work and how they can benefit you.

How Master Key Systems Work

master key systemA master key system involves using the same lock on doors found throughout a building, but each one can be adjusted to only open for certain types of keys. These systems feature a hierarchy of security levels that are programmed using a pin tumbler cylinder lock. In order of least to greatest access, each level is referred to as sub-master, master, grand master, and great grandmaster.

Essentially, each type of key only opens the locks programmed to work with that level, as well as any tier that comes before it. In a four-level system, for example, a great grandmaster key could open every lock, whereas a sub-master will only open doors that require the least amount of security.

Master Key System Benefits

Simplicity

If you own a property with this type of system, you will only need to have one key to open any lock in the building. Similarly, you will only need to give one key to the people who you want to have more limited access to the property.

Cost-Effective

Compared to high-tech and complicated access control solutions, master key systems are typically the most affordable, without compromising on security. If you decide that you want to change a lock’s level of access, you won’t have to pay a locksmith to replace the whole thing—you’ll simply need to ask them to reset it to fit your preferences.

Reduced Risks

When you have multiple people coming and going from your office or home, you run a higher risk of facing theft, safety, and privacy concerns. With this controlled access system, you know exactly who has access to what areas of the building and can rest assured that off-limit spaces will stay that way.
