It’s easy to take garage doors for granted when they are working properly. When your garage door stops working, it can be a major inconvenience. There are a number of possible causes—some you can fix yourself, and others that might require a professional. Here are the most common problems.

4 Reasons Garage Doors Stop Working

1. Dead Batteries

This might seem like an obvious solution, but it’s easy to overlook. The battery in your garage door opener may be dead. Try opening and closing the door with the button inside the garage. If that works but your transmitter doesn’t, it could be a battery. Many garage door transmitters use special batteries that you might need to find at a battery or hardware store.

2. Misaligned Trackgarage doors

Garage doors operate on a metal track. If that track is misaligned, the problem can worsen quickly with use. Look for bends in the rails or gaps between the rollers and the rails. A misaligned track can be dangerous. Discontinue use of your door and call a garage door repair specialist.

3. Blocked Path or Misaligned Photo Eye

Today’s garage doors have a mechanism that prevents an object, person or pet from being smashed beneath the door. If your garage door tries to close and pops back up, make sure there are no obstructions triggering the mechanism. The photo eye that senses an obstruction could also be misaligned.

4. Broken Springs

If your door won’t go up, and you’re sure your transmitter works, it could be a broken torsion spring. The torsion springs lift the garage door, and when one breaks, you might hear a loud clang. If your door has two springs and one breaks, you’ll notice the garage door struggling to open when you push the button. Do not attempt to open your garage door if you have a broken spring. Call a professional to have it replaced.

Problems with garage doors can sometimes be dangerous, so do not attempt a repair yourself unless you have experience. Do not try to open and close broken garage doors manually until it’s been deemed safe by a repair professional.
