As warm summer weather starts to give way to fall temperatures, your HVAC system requires some adjusting, which is especially true if you use a heat pump. These unique systems provide both cooling and heating capabilities—but they don’t typically switch between modes on their own; instead, they require manual adjustment.

To enjoy comfortable temperatures and avoid unnecessary furnace repairs, here are some tips for transitioning your heat pump from summer mode to fall mode:

  • Switch Your Thermostat Mode: Just as you would with a conventional A/C or furnace setup, your first action should be to switch your thermostat to heating mode. Now, instead of changing the temperature by cooling the air, your system will warm the air.

  • Change Air Filters: Dirty filters obstruct airflow, leading to frost buildup and poor HVAC system performance. So make sure you change all of your air filters at least every three months, or more often if you have pets or a larger household. Switching from summer to fall mode is also an important time to change your filters.

  • Schedule a Heating Inspection: Experts recommend scheduling your routine HVAC system inspection at least twice a year, ideally in fall and spring. During your appointment, your technician will inspect refrigerant levels, tighten loose connections, drain condensate, and clean out other components. This will help you ensure a comfortable fall and winter with no unexpected heat pump or furnace repairs.

  • Set the Temperature: For fall mode, set your thermostat to the lowest temperature at which you and your household will be comfortable. Then you can adjust this as the season progresses.

  • Use the “Auto” Setting: If it isn’t already, set your heat pump fan to “auto.” What this means is the fan will only kick on when it needs to, as opposed to running constantly—saving you money on electricity.
