Diabetic retinopathy screenings play an essential role in diabetes care. As one of the more common causes of vision loss among the working-age population, those at risk of diabetic retinopathy should obtain a thorough eye screening at least once every two years to ensure early detection. Below, the Dothan, AL-based physicians at Fairview Clinic, P.C. discuss the condition and what to expect from the exam.

What Is Diabetic Retinopathy?

Diabetic retinopathy is a vascular condition affecting individuals with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Diabetes wreaks havoc on the circulatory system, restricting blood flow throughout the body. When damage occurs to the ocular blood vessels, diabetic retinopathy will often follow.

Unfortunately, diabetic retinopathy is not easily detected. Noticeable symptoms may not develop until serious damage has already occurred. As such, those affected can easily harbor the condition for long periods without knowing it. An eye screening can diagnose the issue before it gets out of hand, keeping your vision in check.

What Will Your Screening Include?

Diabetic retinopathy screenings are performed by a trained optometrist or ophthalmologist and generally take no more than 30 minutes start to finish. To properly examine your eyes, they must be fully dilated. This is achieved with special eye drops, which will enlarge your pupils over a 15- to 20-minute period.

diabetesOnce the drops have taken effect, the doctor will photograph your eyes with a special camera. Expect to see a bright light as each photo is taken. Though the initial flash may startle you, the process is generally quite comfortable.

Following the exam, you may find your vision has blurred. You may also experience difficulty focusing on nearby objects. This is completely normal and will subside in a few hours’ time. Your doctor may also provide you with a set of protective glasses to wear for the day. It’s also worth noting you will be unfit to operate a motor vehicle. As such, it’s advised you have a friend or family member transport you from the appointment.
