You've spent time and energy creating the ultimate outdoor retreat, and as summer comes to an end, you may think the work is over. However, while the bulk of landscape design labor takes place in spring, year-round maintenance is required to keep your garden and water features in pristine condition. Follow these three fall garden and pond maintenance tips to ensure your outdoor oasis is prepared for the cooler months.

3 Fall Garden & Pond Maintenance Tips

1. Prune Plants

The first step in your fall landscape maintenance routine should be to prune your plants as the weather begins to cool. Near the end of August, you may notice leaves beginning to turn colors or wilt. Make it a weekly routine to cut off dead flowers or changing leaves and keep your garden groomed and free of debris. When frost arrives, trim your plants and remove tropical species from your pond. Pruning your plant life will also reduce buildup in your water features.

2. Stop Fertilizing

Lower the amount and frequency of each application in September so your garden can adapt to the cooler weather. By the time the first frost hits—usually in mid-October—quit fertilizing altogether, and avoid excess watering. This will alert your plant life that it's time to hibernate for the winter.

3. Prepare Your Pond for Cooler Weather

Even if you've pruned the plants in and around your pond, it's nearly impossible to prevent falling leaves from landing on its surface. Make it a daily habit to check your skimmer and remove foliage in the pond. If your pond features fish, install an aerator to ensure their safety. You may also want to consider a floating de-icer to prevent the top of your pond from freezing. Stop feeding your fish once the temperature drops below 50 degrees.
