Propane is a popular home & recreational fuel; it can do everything from heat your fish house, RV, or grill. With a multitude of uses, having a propane tank can save you major money. No matter why you’re using it, knowing how to properly fill a propane tank is the key to safety. Here’s how to get the job done right.

How to Fill a Propane Tank

Inspect the Exterior

Before touching or opening your tank, do a visual once-over of the outside nozzle and cylinder. If you notice bends or dents, you’ll need to consult a professional before touching the tank. Your local gas station, and auto repair shop is used to dealing with propane, so they’re the best source for determining safety level. If you have any questions give a call and Pat can answer your questions, and fill your tank.

Weigh Your Tank

fill a propane tankWeighing your propane tank accommodates any leftover liquid still inside, preventing overflow. “TW,” or tare weight, will be stamped on the cylinder’s back; look for the number following it. This number states the empty tank weight, so you know when your tank is almost empty and ready for a refill.

The letters “WC,” or water capacity, are on the bottom of the cylinder, indicating the maximum amount of liquid you can fill a propane tank with when empty. Do the math, keep leftover liquid in mind, and only fill until necessary. If you need help with the numbers, your auto repair shop can show you where to find them, as well as how to add and subtract to find the correct amount for your specific tank. Since inhaling carbon dioxide is a real danger, don’t risk filling up if you aren’t sure of the right amount to pour in.

Connect the Dispenser

Once you’ve weighed your tank and set the scale, it’s time to fill up. Connect the dispenser to the fitting and turn on the valve. Make sure you don’t exceed your limit. Once the tank reaches capacity, a small stream of liquid will spray out of the bleeder valve. Screw it back on (wear gloves to avoid any contact with the liquid), and you’re good to go. Within minutes, you’ll be refilled with enough home fuel oil to keep you warm all winter.
