Acai berries burst onto the superfood scene nearly eight years ago, when dietitians and consumers alike first discovered the fruit’s satisfying taste and many health benefits. It was then that Kahuku Farms planted their own seeds in hopes of bringing the sweet treat to Oahu’s North Shore. After years of nurturing and months of preparation, Fall 2016 marked their first harvest. It was then finally time to create one of the local café’s signature dishes: the Hawaiian Acai Bowl.

The family owned farm tirelessly vetted dozens of toppings and preparation techniques, all while hoping to uncover a recipe with a perfect blend of bold flavors and pleasant textures. Having gone through 20 variations and trial recipes, they finally found it!

local cafeKahuku Farm’s acai bowl features a frozen blend of acai as well as other berries, apple bananas, agave, and a vanilla-haupia sauce, featuring items grown and prepared just behind their local café. It’s then topped with slices of apple bananas (a popular tropical fruit) and, for a boost of natural sweetness, a lilikoi butter drizzle and graham cracker-macadamia nut crumble. Together, these fresh ingredients cover multiple taste profiles—from the sweet and tangy to the crunchy and creamy—for a treat that you can’t find anywhere else on the island. In fact, Kahuku Farm’s bowls are the first commercial use of Hawaii-grown acai berries that the family is aware of.

But locally grown acai isn’t the first landmark for this local café, and it won’t be the last. From their decadent Hawaiian chocolate to their natural bath and body items, Kahuku Farms continues to be a driving force in the modern farm-to-table movement.
