If you're driving in hot weather, cold air is a necessity. But sometimes your car's air conditioner isn't up to the task. If you find your vents blowing hot air, there are several possible causes, some of which call for immediate auto repair.

Why Your AC Is Running Hot

1. Blocked or Broken Condenser

The condenser is the part of your air conditioning system that cools hot compressed refrigerant back to ambient temperatures. To do this, the condenser relies on the outside air flowing over the front of your vehicle. Objects like leaves or other debris can get caught and block airflow, preventing the air from cooling the refrigerant. Cleaning out the grille at the front of your car may get your air conditioner running again. You should also check for any visible breaks or holes where the car might be losing refrigerant.

2. Low Refrigerant

Auto RepairEven without a noticeable leak, your AC can lose refrigerant over time. Take the vehicle in to a car repair shop to have the refrigerant topped off, or replace the refrigerant yourself. If the problem reoccurs, look for any leaks or add a leak-sealing product to the system.

3. Broken Cooling Fan

When you're driving slowly or stopped at a light, there's no air moving over the front of your car to cool the condenser. To combat this, car manufacturers install cooling fans. If a cooling fan breaks, your AC will start blowing hot air whenever you're not moving fast enough. An auto repair shop will replace the fan quickly and easily.

4. Worn Out Compressor

All air conditioners rely on compressing and expanding refrigerant to manipulate temperatures. If the compressor stops working effectively, the air conditioner won't be able to produce cold air. Your car AC repair specialists can check your compressor when you bring your car in.

5. Electrical Problems

Sometimes the issue isn't with any part of the air conditioner, but with the controls that run it. If the AC itself looks fine, your mechanic will check the electronics next and may be able to replace any malfunctioning components.

Don't just live with a broken air conditioner. Look over your system today to locate the problem, or make an appointment with your mechanic.
