Though cramps and inconvenience are no fun, Alaska Women’s Health PC in Anchorage says your monthly menstrual cycle provides an important glimpse into your health. If you are missing your period or experiencing more severe bleeding than usual, there might be an underlying issue that needs to be addressed.

If you notice any of the following symptoms, make an appointment to visit your OBGYN as soon as possible.

4 Warning Signs That Indicate You Should Call Your OBGYN

1. Missed Periods

You might be perfectly fine with missing your period, but this can be a sign of something more serious. If you miss two or more periods and have ruled out the chance of pregnancy, talk to your OBGYN. Your missing monthly visitor might be an indicator of underlying issues, such as a hormonal imbalance, thyroid problems, polycystic ovarian syndrome, or premature menopause.

2. Excessive Bleeding

During the average menstrual cycle, you can expect to release anywhere from four to 12 teaspoons of blood. Your period can change from one month to the next, and it’s not unusual to have heavy bleeding one month, followed by a light cycle. However, if you are experiencing severe bleeding that lasts longer than seven days, Alaska Women’s Health PC says this can be a sign of fibroids, a hormonal imbalance, stress, or thyroid issues.

3. Extremely Light Cycles

OBGYNA light cycle can seem like a blessing, but it can also be just as concerning as severe bleeding. Underweight women with low body fat percentages often experience light periods, and your OBGYN might discuss diet and exercise options to help you gain weight and get back on track. Other causes of a light cycle include exercise frequency, stress levels, and the type of birth control you’re taking.

4. Painful Cramps

Though they seem inevitable, cramps shouldn’t leave you immobile or doubled over in pain. If you are experiencing extremely painful cramps, you might have endometriosis. This health condition causes the tissue cells that line the uterus to travel through the fallopian tubes and bleed into the pelvis.
