Contrary to popular belief, fall can be the perfect time to plant, as it gives trees and shrubs the opportunity to take root before the cold snap of winter rolls in. But it can be difficult to know where to begin. Here, expert sales people and landscapers at Lakeview Garden Center & Landscaping, based in Fairfield, OH, discuss a few landscaping tips for planting trees and shrubs during the upcoming fall season.

A Guide to Planting Trees & Shrubs in the Fall

Use Your Space Wisely

LandscapingAs with any other seasonal planting, it's important to be aware of your spatial and climatic limitations. If your soil is particularly moist, refrain from planting trees that require a drier type soil.

Fall is for planting ! Warm days and cool nights make the roots explode into the ground.

Stick to Autumnal Plants.

Many resilient deciduous trees are perfect for planting in the fall. These may include crabapple, hawthorn, maple, sycamore, pine, or spruce trees. If you're looking for a flash of autumnal color, use serviceberry, fothergillia, and many viburnums.

Don't Wait Too Long.

Many deciduous trees won’t be dug and available until after a good killing frost so that the buds are set for next year. But trees that are on top of the ground at the nursery are fine to plant and available right now. When planted in December or later many trees will just sit there and wait for the spring to start root growth. With that in mind you are still ahead because the tree will establish quicker in the spring.
