When pet odors seep into the padding beneath your carpet, it can make rooms in your home intolerable. For many people, they ultimately pull up and replace the carpet and padding, but there are easier, more cost-effective solutions. There are plenty of do-it-yourself, heavy-duty, and over-the-counter carpet cleaning options available. You may have to deal with some trial and error, but, with the methods below, you should be able to get the job done.

How Do You Remove Pet Odors From Carpets?

1. Baking Soda & Apple Cider Vinegar

carpet-cleaning-floodco This time-tested carpet cleaning combination has been used to clean stains, smells, and other issues throughout homes for centuries. Once you’ve located stains where the pet odors are coming from, cover them with baking soda and a small amount of apple cider vinegar. You’ll need to use a brush to spread it evenly. Let it sit overnight, and, in the morning, vacuum the area. The baking soda should have absorbed most of the smell. If needed, repeat.

2. Enzymes

For particularly troublesome odors, you may need to get down to a molecular level. Tough stains need to be broken down, and the enzymes found in citrus are perfect for the job. Begin by combining brown sugar, lemon and orange peels, and water in a spray bottle. Gas will begin to build up inside the bottle, which you’ll have to release. Shake the bottle regularly, and, over time, the enzymes will be released. This process is best completed over several months but can work as an immediate solution when combined with other tips and tricks.

3. Carpet Cleaning Service

For larger jobs that require multiple rooms or professional equipment, hire a licensed carpet cleaning company. They’ll have the tools for the job, as well as the experience needed to tackle any odors that are tainting your home. If you’re facing more serious issues, such as odors coming from hardwood or other paneled flooring, they can also work on finding a solution that will remove them without needing a full replacement.
