Selling rare coins is a great way to make some cash, especially if you understand the value of your collection. Whether you’ve been collecting for years or just recently inherited them, the most important thing about selling coins is getting the best price.  But how can you be sure of what they are worth and that you aren’t getting paid too little?

First, you need to find out your coins’ value. Most pawnbrokers, while offering a great place to sell, don’t know their coin value as well as they do other items. So you need to do the research for them ahead of time and have it with you when you talk to them about selling. To find out the value of rare coins, check out a coin value chart online or buy a guide.

Don’t try to clean your coins before selling them. This can actually diminish their value. A lot of what gives a coin such value is it having its original coloring. Cleaning your coins so that they shine can actually diminish their worth by quite a lot.

If your rare coins are part of a set, keep them and sell them that way. Often, the value of a set is much higher than the sum of coins sold individually.

That said, don’t feel forced into a sale situation if you aren’t comfortable with it or feel like you are being low-balled. As nice as it is to have the money, you should get what is deserving for the piece and not settle.
