Event Information

In Hawaiian culture, the Pū, or conch shell, is a gift from the ocean. The sound it produces when it’s blown symbolizes the ancient traditions of early islanders, and it’s a practice we still take part in today. To celebrate the culture, Pearlridge Center in Aiea, HI, is hosting a family event on Saturday, Sept. 16 — the Keiki Conch Shell Blowing Contest! It will test our keiki’s skills while giving local families an opportunity to have fun and learn more about traditional Hawaiian culture.

Keiki Conch Shell Blowing Contest: What to Know About This Family Event

The Meaning of the Conch Shell

family eventIn the past, conch shells were blown for several reasons. They signified the start of an official ceremony and helped watermen communicate with those on land. The number of blows and length of each sound represented different meanings, and the language has been passed through generations. To blow the Pū was to call the divine, and the sacred meanings of the sound represents cultural significance and ancient tradition. In modern times, Hawaiians still use conch shells in cultural ceremonies. It’s often blown at the end of the day to say goodbye to the sun and to say mahalo to special guests.
