Car chip keys are programmed to be a part of a vehicle’s anti-theft system, preventing a robber from starting a car. They were first introduced to the market during the early 90s when theft rates for vehicles and motorcycles were skyrocketing. The new technology was so successful in curbing the number of carnapping cases, that most modern vehicles come with them now.

How Do Car Chip Keys Operate?

car chip keysEach one contains a customized microchip embedded inside its plastic head, which is assigned a unique serial number during its initial programming. The chip functions by transmitting and receiving radio signals to and from a vehicle’s computer. In turn, a remote receiver validates the signal. If the codes match, it will allow the vehicle to operate. The wrong key, on the other hand, will send back an erratic signal to the engine management system and prevent an ignition from happening. Even copied keys will not work without the proper signal.

Can I Duplicate a Car Chip Key?

Though you can duplicate your key, it needs to be programmed to your vehicle or cloned from the existing one. There are auto shops and local car dealerships that provide transponder key services, but a professional auto locksmith is more qualified to help. They have the right skills and equipment to provide you with an extra set, and will usually ask for your license and registration number to verify the vehicle is yours.
