If you're having metal fabrication or structural work done, it's important to know exactly what kind of metal you're getting. Just saying “steel” isn't enough; this metal comes in a wider variety of types and qualities. Most broadly, steel can be divided into four categories: carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel, and tool steel.

1. Carbon Steel

Steel is made by alloying iron with carbon, which strengthens the metal immensely. For this reason, it should be obvious that low-carbon mixtures, also called mild steel, are weaker than medium-carbon formulas. However, adding too much carbon hardens the metal at the expense of making it more brittle. Rebar and steel beams, which must flex slightly, are often made from mild steel.

2. Alloy Steel

Metal FabricationAlloy steels include small amounts of other elements besides carbon which impart qualities not found in carbon steel. The addition of manganese, silicon, nickel, titanium, copper, chromium, and aluminum also makes alloy steel more affordable.

3. Stainless Steel

This is a specific alloy steel which includes at least 10.5% chromium by mass. The addition of this much chromium results in a metal which is nearly impervious to corrosion and rust, and which is difficult to stain. Its corrosion resistance makes stainless steel ideal for surgical equipment, appliances, and industrial equipment which must endure harsh conditions.

4. Tool Steel

Tool steel is not a specific formula, but rather an assortment of steel types which are notable for their hardness and their abrasion resistance. These varieties are used in dies, hammers, knives, and mold making.

Before you order metal fabrication services, make sure you know exactly how the metal will be used and what conditions it will be subject to. Your supplier will help you weigh price against durability and strength to find the formula that’s right for you.
