X-rays are a standard part of routine dental check-ups for adults, but some parents have concerns when it comes to their use on children due to the brief exposure to radiation. The American Dental Association is aware of these concerns and has released specific guidelines regarding when they should and shouldn't be used. Kids dentists adhere to this advice regarding the diagnostic tool.

When Is It Appropriate for Dentists to Use X-Rays on Children

Baby Teeth

Kids DentistIt’s important to check your child’s teeth for cavities, as well as misalignment and development problems. If your child doesn’t have any adult teeth, dentists should perform visual examinations or use a probe. However, it isn't always possible for a dentist to use these methods to check the proximal surfaces or the parts of the teeth which face each other. Because of this, your child will need an X-ray every one to two years to check for issues in these areas.

Adult Teeth

It’s assumed that children’s dental hygiene habits will improve as they get older, and they’ll be more able to notice and communicate any problems. For this reason, X-rays become less vital. During adolescence, they will only be needed every 18 months to three years. Once again, the dentist will look for cavities which have gone unnoticed and monitor the development of your child’s adult teeth and jaw.

Special Circumstances

The ADA has made it clear that their recommended timelines are meant for children whose teeth are healthy overall. If a child has dental problems or health conditions which need to be monitored, dentists are directed to use discretion in ordering X-rays. Possible problems which may call for more frequent X-rays include dental decay, periodontal disease, or known developmental problems in the mouth and jaw. The benefits of a precise image of the teeth must be weighed against the price of a very small amount of radiation exposure. Your child's dentist can explain the reasoning behind the decision.
