Sometimes the signs of nursing home abuse or neglect are hard to identify. Often, the elderly cannot communicate what is happening to them. Thus, it is important for family members to keep a watchful eye, to ensure that their loved one is receiving proper care and treatment.

To help you, we have listed some of the potential signs of abuse and neglect:

  • Personality Changes: Does the person you know seem to be avoiding you? Does the person seem afraid of you or agitated when you speak to him or her? While some personality changes are expected with age and conditions like dementia, very sudden changes in personality should encourage you to stay alert.
  • Injuries: Signs of physical abuse include unexplainable bruises, welts, sprains or dislocations and even restraint marks on the wrist. Particularly, when injuries appear symmetrically on both sides of the body, you should report the situation immediately.
  • Neglect & Withholding Care: Neglect is a very serious and common type of abuse that can be identified by unusual weight loss, unsanitary conditions and abandonment. Things such as refusal of care, failing to administer medication and failing to help with tasks are all forms of elder abuse inflicted by a caregiver who is neglectful or withholding care on purpose. Nursing home neglect is very commonly responsible for all sorts of preventable injuries and even death. Identifying such situations early is imperative to the health and safety of the elderly dependent.
  • Emotional Abuse: Does your loved one seem withdrawn or unusually distant? Verbal and emotional abuse may also be spotted if you notice the senior feels afraid of the caregiver. Have you noticed yelling, short-tempered behavior or forced isolation? Has a caregiver told you not to visit or keeps making excuses for why a visit would be unsuitable? Such forms of emotional abuse are very serious and should be remedied as soon as possible.

If you’ve noticed strange occurrences, don’t be afraid to contact the authorities and report your findings.
