Summer has run its course, and school is back in session. At FasTracKids in Staten Island’s Grasmere, they understand that this time of year can be stressful for children and parents alike, especially if your little one is new to the classroom. That’s why their elite instructors have compiled these five tips for transitioning into preschool.

Top 5 Ways to Prepare Your Child for Preschool

1. Create a Routine

Preschools rely on routines to organize their curriculum and establish frameworks for creative learning. So, if you don’t have a consistent schedule at home, your little one may have trouble adjusting to the classroom. Create one by writing out a “Good Morning” chart with all the tasks your child needs to complete after waking up, such as making their bed, getting dressed, eating breakfast, and brushing their teeth. Make a chart for their nightly rituals too.

preschool2. Read Every Day

Don’t forget to include reading in your child’s daily routine. Reading bolsters their vocabulary as well as lays the foundation for imaginative thinking, making the skill an essential for any preschooler.

3. Strengthen Fine Motor Skills

When you first think of early education, you likely think of reading, writing, mathematics, communication, and other related subjects. However, physical development is just as important as mental and social. To help your child improve their fine motor skills before the first day of school, have them create fun crafts. Manipulating clay into shapes, for example, not only improves dexterity but also tests their handwriting skills, both of which they’ll need in the classroom.

4. Use Teachable Moments

Other opportunities to teach your little one the skills they’ll need in preschool may arise unexpectedly. If you’re walking through your neighborhood, for example, talk to your child about changes in the weather or flowers blooming along the sidewalk. When a friend is upset, ask them why their peer may feel that way.

5. Visit the Facility

Whether or not your child is outwardly nervous about starting preschool, it’s always a good idea to visit the facility ahead of time. A tour will allow them to become familiar with their classroom, teachers, lunchroom, and playground before the big day.

With a little preparation and a lot of love, your child will have all the tools they need for a successful school year.
