When your furniture suffers from water damage, the unfortunate result is large, unsightly stains that are tough to clean. Whether your furniture is upholstered, wood, or metal, there are a few tricks to eliminating big stains after water has left its mark. FloodCo, Flathead Valley and northwest Montana’s disaster restoration specialists, offers a few tips for getting out water damage stains and making your furniture look new again.

How Do You Remove Water Damage Stains on Furniture?

Upholstered Fabric

If possible, attack the water stain while it’s still wet. Blot with a clean cloth to remove as much fluid as possible. Do not rub, as it can damage the fabric. For dried stains on fabric that can be removed, lightly dampen the stain with a clean wet cloth and then steam with an iron on the reverse side using low heat. If the fabric cannot be removed, steam with an iron before using a towel to soak up the water. You can also use a solution of white vinegar and water followed by air drying.

Leather

Wood

For wooden furniture, a tiny bit of rubbing alcohol and a clean cloth will remove water rings and stains. Rub gently and check the stain periodically as you clean it. Once it’s gone, wipe the surface with a different clean cloth. Buff and seal with furniture wax to protect it. Always work along the wood grain for best results.

Metal

White vinegar is also great for metal furniture that has suffered some water damage. A small dab on a clean cloth is all you need to wipe away any moisture stains. Once the spots are removed, give the pieces another wipe with a clean, dry cloth. For very large areas, soak a cloth in vinegar and water before wiping down the furniture. Tough stains, especially made by hard water, will require more vinegar to remove.
