If you’re anything like most dog lovers, your pet feels like a member of your family, sharing in your adventures and comforting you in tough times. No matter how much you love your dog, though, he or she can’t complain of symptoms—so how do you know when they need medical attention?

Milford Animal Hospital, serving families and their pets in Clermont County for 40 years, suggests bringing your dog to a vet if you notice any of the following signs:

  • Sudden change in eating habits: All dogs skip a meal or two now and then, especially in the summer. But going more than two days without eating usually indicates that something is wrong.
  • Constantly thirsty:Dogs don’t normally need a lot of water, so pay attention if your furry friend suddenly can’t seem to satisfy her thirst. This can indicate the beginning of kidney disease or diabetes.
  • Rough, patchy coat: If your dog’s coat suddenly becomes dry and rough, with thinning or bald spots, he or she could be developing a skin disease or an allergic reaction.
  • Unusual fatigue: Most dogs will be sore, sleepy, or lethargic once in a while. However, if yours has lost interest in things he or she normally loves, like walking or playing, it might be time to seek out a vet.
  • Vomiting: Don’t panic if your dog throws up occasionally, as that’s normal. However, if she vomits several meals in a row, or vomits blood, seek medical assistance immediately to prevent dehydration and other health problems.
