Most people know brushing and flossing their teeth are an important part of their oral health care. But how do you know if you are doing them right? For proper dental hygiene habits, Kimberling City Dental Center in Missouri specializes in teaching their patients about their oral health. Here, the Stone County dentist offers important tips for brushing and flossing your teeth.

6 Brushing & Flossing Tips

1. Use a Soft Toothbrush

Your toothbrush should have soft bristles to avoid hurting your gums. Avoid pushing down too hard, too, or you might damage your mouth. Instead of scrubbing, you want to be massaging your teeth and gums.

2. Take Your Time

dentistYou should brush your teeth for at least two minutes. It’s best to set a timer or an hourglass to know how long 120 seconds are.

3. Switch Out Your Toothbrush Regularly

Your dentist recommends replacing your toothbrush every three to four months. You can replace it more often if your bristles get worn out or discolored before that time.

4. Brush in Circles

Currently, you might brush back and forth, but that’s not the best way to clean your teeth and gums. You should go from top to bottom and make circles with your toothbrush inside of your mouth. You should start from your gums down to your teeth, and don’t forget your tongue.

5. Floss Once a Day

While you should brush twice a day, dentists recommend flossing your teeth at least once a day, ideally at night. To make your daily brushing and flossing sessions count, use mouthwash as well.

6. Floss Properly

When you floss, you should curve around the base of each tooth. The floss should go beneath the gum line, but you must be as gentle as possible to avoid cutting your tissue and bleeding.
