EVENT

Event Information

Oak Grove Cemetery was first established in 1852 by La Crosse, WI’s founding fathers. Since then, they have interred over 30,000 people and helped thousands more families through their time of grief. So, in a sense, their grounds are a “silent city,” telling a story of love and loss as well as housing the community’s unique history.

To bring this story to light, the cemetery is partnering with the La Crosse County Historical Society (LCHS) to host the 16th annual Discover the Silent City. This highly anticipated event will take place on Saturday, September 16, 2017, and feature guided walking tours, motor coach rides, and dramatic reenactments by local artists and performers. If you’re interested in attending, see below for Oak Grove Cemetary’s FAQ regarding Discover the Silent City.

What Do the Reenactments Entail?

This year’s theme is “Leaving a Mark: Artists of La Crosse,” in which Oak Grove Cemetery and the LCHS celebrate the local artists and visionaries that shaped La Crosse into the town you see today. Throughout the tour, you’ll encounter many performers wearing period-appropriate attire and standing near historic grave sites. These individuals will reenact stories of local artists meant to immerse you in the area’s rich history as well as inspire you to leave your own mark on the community.

How Often Will the Tours Run?

Walking tours will depart every 15 minutes, with the first one leaving at 11 a.m. The first motor coach tour will start at 10:30 a.m., courtesy of the Mayo Clinic Health System.

Where Can I Buy Tickets?

You can purchase tickets at the LCHS’s office on West Avenue South or at LCHShistory.org. You can also buy them at the gates on September 16. However, Oak Grove Cemetery recommends securing your tickets beforehand, so you can choose the tour that best fits your schedule.

How Much Do They Cost?
