Children and parents alike view losing baby teeth as a symbol of maturity, but what happens when a child loses their teeth earlier or later than expected? The pediatric dentists at Pedodontic Associates say that it is likely not a big problem. Below, they offer insight on the topic.

Tooth Development in Children

At What Age Does It Begin & End?

Typically, a child will begin to lose baby teeth when they are six or seven years old. Sometimes, teeth start becoming loose as early as four or as late as eight years old. If the child starts to lose teeth at a young age, there is no need to worry as long if there is no sign of injury. Visit a pediatric dentist straight away if you notice any decay.

Pediatric dentistBaby teeth also fall out in the same order they came in. This usually begins with the bottom center teeth, then continues to the top center teeth. The molars are the last teeth to fall out between the ages of nine and 12. By the time a child is thirteen, he or she should have a mouth full of permanent teeth.

How Do They Fall Out?

All children start with baby teeth. When permanent teeth start to grow, they push the baby teeth up and, eventually, out of the gums. Once a tooth is loose, it will take one to two months for it to naturally fall out. Although you may have heard of some teeth-pulling methods, try to refrain from pulling out a tooth. If the tooth is not ready, the root may be damaged, causing infection.
