To keep your car at its best, it’s necessary to have your tires rotated, balanced, and aligned by a professional. However, those tires will eventually be too worn out to restore. Part of basic maintenance is knowing when to change your tires to keep your car safe and efficient. Keep your eye out for the following signs, and take your vehicle in for service when you notice them.

How to Tell You Need New Tires

1. Worn Treads

TiresCheck the depth of your tire treads to determine whether they're worn out. The minimum legal amount of tread is 1/16”. You can test it by inserting a penny between the treads; if you can see the top of Lincoln's head, you need new tires.

2. Leaks

It's normal for tire pressure to fluctuate with temperature and for tires to lose air slowly over time, but if you notice your tires deflating rapidly, they'll need repairs at the very least. A normal rate of loss is about 1 PSI per month.

3. Bulges

The thinner your tire rubber, the more it will be pushed outward by the air inside. If you notice bubbles or bumps on your tire, you have a thin spot that’s likely to burst soon.

4. Cracks

In most cases, you'll wear down your treads before weathering becomes a problem. But all weather will eventually degrade the rubber of your tires. If you start to see cracks, it's time for a replacement.
