The scope involved underpinning, micropiles, shoring and more.

The Franklin County Courthouse Project

In July of 2011, The Dwyer Company was contracted by the Commonwealth of Kentucky to design and build a shoring system for the courthouse. The original courthouse was constructed in 1835, and the other buildings on the block,  including the Good Shepherd Church, were also constructed in the same period. As a result, all of the structures were erected with the limitations of construction capabilities at that time, and the foundation system used locally quarried limestone.

underpinningThe project involved four separate phases, each with a unique design to handle the unique challenges involved. They installed a helical tieback shotcrete wall along a wall of the church with helical underpinning. The northwestern border was shored to ensure neighboring businesses, churches, and schools wouldn’t be disrupted. The church foundation wall was close to the alley, so The Dwyer Company used a soil nailing system to reduce the embedment length.

They removed a concrete retaining wall that was installed in the 1900s to access the footings and underpinned all of the foundations. They secured the footing both lateral and vertical and excavated the building in four-foot cuts, with a row of helical piles. They used the same jack-down pile method for the Courthouse, working on both sides of the foundation wall to reduce eccentricity. The entire project included 82 helical tie-backs, 60 soil nails, and 25 grouted jack down piles.
