Whether dealing with a damaged headlight, faulty transmission, or another car malfunction, the wisest decision you can make is to pull over and call for roadside assistance. The team at Bolster’s Towing says there are a few things you should do while waiting for help. This way, better service can be given when it arrives, and you’ll remain safe in the meantime.

Below, the staff at Bolster’s Towing shares five things you should do before roadside assistance reaches you:

  • Find a Safe Place to Park: Even with emergency blinkers on, stopping in the middle of the road can cause serious accidents. Once you notice signs of trouble, pull the car over to a safe area. To avoid getting sideswiped, park as far away from traffic as possible. Try to find a parking lot or side street in residential areas.
  • roadside assistanceUse Hazard Lights: While you’re driving around and looking for a place to park, make sure to turn on your hazard lights. This lets other drivers know they should pass your vehicle with caution.
  • Put Flares on the Road: If you’re driving at night or in a remote area, it might be hard for oncoming traffic to see a dark car parked on the road. For better visibility, keep hazard lights on and place flares on the road. – Unless it is wildfire season, then no flares.
  • Open the Hood: Overheated mechanical components can turn minor car problems into major issues. Opening the hood will help prevent overheating and alert fellow drivers to be careful passing your vehicle.
  • Remain with the vehicle if possible: If you are in an area without cell service and there are multiple people with the vehicle, flag down a passing motorist and send one person to a telephone. At least one person should remain with the vehicle in case law enforcement or a passing tow truck should stop to assist. – If you do not stay with the vehicle, leave a note on the dash to let assistance know where you went and what you think is wrong with the vehicle if it is not obvious.
