Their staff advises not to wait for an ice-cold wake-up call—instead, there are many signs of failure you can look out for.

Plumbing Professionals on 4 Signs Water Heaters Are Set to Fail

1. Age

Most water heaters have a lifespan of about 10 years. If it’s older than that, it’s time to consider a replacement. Verify its age by looking for the serial number on the manufacturer’s sticker on the upper portion of the unit. The serial number has a date code, such as “A061032637.” “A” signifies the month. Since it’s the first letter of the alphabet, it represents the first month, January. The two subsequent digits reflect the year, “06.” So, in this example, the water heater was made in January 2006. Check the manufacturer’s website or ask a plumbing professional for more information about the code.

2. Rusty Water

If rusty water comes out when you engage the “hot” dispenser on your sink, it may be a sign the water heater is on its last legs. However, it could also signal that the pipes themselves are the problem. Check by draining several buckets of water from the water heater. If it’s still producing a brownish mixture, the tank is most likely rusting on the inside and must be replaced.

3. Leaks

plumbingMoisture around the water heater is a telltale sign of a leak or fracture. The metal expands as it heats, so if it has been compromised, liquid may seep out. In this case, the leaking will stop once the tank has cooled. This situation can also be caused by damaged fittings or pipes or loose connections. Have a professional come out and check to see if all these parts are dry. If so, it’s probably time to replace the unit.

4. Odd Noises

Unusual noises, such as popping, banging, or rumbling are also a cause for concern. Over time, water heaters accumulate sediment or mineral deposit buildup. As the unit attempts to do its job, the buildup insulates the heat from the water, causing the tank to overheat. This and overexertion leads to odd noises, as well as a significant amount of wear and tear. With prolonged overheating, the metal will fatigue, resulting in leaks and system failure.
