Central air conditioners likely act as your best friend throughout the blazing hot summer months, but are you familiar with how they actually work? While some people get hung up by the technical jargon, it's actually a fairly straightforward process. Hufford Heating and Air Conditioning has been keeping homes and businesses in the eastern Cincinnati, Ohio, area comfortable for over 65 years, and they’re here to explain this process.

The Central Air Conditioning Process

Most central air conditioners consist of indoor and outdoor units, which work air in and out of the building through an air duct system. Once the temperature-controlling thermostat signals it's time to work, the process begins.

Rerouting & Filtering

The first thing the air-handling unit does is draw air in from rooms throughout the building using a motorized fan. The air travels through return-air ducts toward a filter, which will remove lint, dust, and other airborne particles. The more advanced your filter is, the better it will be for cleaning up pollutants.

While there are different types of systems available, the key to making your central air conditioner work properly is whether it functions in tandem with an indoor furnace or separate air-handling unit. In some cases, these are combined into a single outdoor unit, but the principle remains the same. Refrigerant moves through copper tubing between the exterior compressor coil and interior evaporator coil, absorbing and dissipating the air's heat.

Recirculation

The air introduced through the ductwork is now cooled to the desired level, successfully taking the heat off another brutal summer day. This process will allow the cool air to continually pump into your home.

There are many benefits to a central air conditioning unit, from improved indoor comfort to cleaner air and quieter operation.
